What’s a Domestic Engineer?
Some of you might think it sounds sophisticated, a professional, someone who has a job in engineering? I’d have to agree with the sophistication, so I took it upon myself one night, over a couple glasses of wine to ask a few lady friends what they thought a Domestic Engineer was, and I had some very different, yet honest opinions. One gal pal said,” it sounds like a really awesome vacuum cleaner”. I laughed as it does make for a good name. Another gal pal explained,” it sounds like someone who stays home”. The other two ladies responded with, “It’s someone who builds kickass lego houses at home”, and the other said, “it sounds like someone who wanted to be an engineer, but is too lazy to go to school, instead they’re sitting on their ass at home doing nothing”. Yikes!! So many interesting responses, and one of the four responses hit it on the nose. Let’s look at the meaning of Domestic and Engineer. These come from the New Oxford American Dictionary, so the meaning may vary elsewhere.
Domestic: Objective 1: relating to the running of a home or to family relations.
Engineer: noun : a person who designs, builds,or maintains engines, machines, or public works Verb : design and build(a machine or structure): the men who engineered the tunnel.
There’s some interesting meanings of a Domestic Engineer online, and the one that really stood out to me was written as this, “A Domestic Engineer is another term for a homemaker, someone who takes care of the family and the wellbeing of the members thereof. A Domestic Engineer is more important and powerful than the political leaders”. Such an interesting meaning and I really liked it. It catches me laughing out loud as I type this. One could only hope that we were more important than political leaders especially with what’s happening in some few different countries right now. But that’s another subject, another day.
In my words, a domestic engineer is another word for a homemaker, one who wears many many hats. We are therapists, dishwashers, cab drivers, cooks, planners, personal shoppers, cleaners, and so on. The list goes on yet we’re not paid, we don’t get any big government benefits so we can be stay at home moms. Pretty sad if you ask me. What?, are we to think that no politicians mothers chose to stay home to raise their children, ever in history?
I have to admit, after 17 years of being a mother, my duties have begun to slow down around the house. Even my volunteer work at the school has come to an end. However, my child therapy support is on the rise as my kids continue to evolve. Consulting many self help books has given me the guidance I have needed to guide my own. Thank goodness. And now here I am offering my own personal vision of becoming the best job I know, and the only career I ever wanted for myself, a Domestic Engineer. I consider myself knowledgeable in the field of motherhood. And I'm willing to share all my secrets, do’s and don'ts.
